The national population study SCAPIS received 100 million SEK from the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation. SCAPIS is a unique research project concerning the heart, blood vessels and lungs led by a national research group at the university hospitals in Sweden in collaboration with the Swedish Heart-Lung Foundation.

- SCAPIS is a unique study with great potential for research breakthroughs in the fight against diseases related to heart, blood vessels and lungs. The foundation is therefore granting 100 million to this important research study, says Göran Sandberg, executive member of the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation.

In 2012, a pilot study of SCAPIS was performed at Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg, which involved more than 1,100 participants. Gothenburg was additionally the first place to begin the full-scale study in which 5000 persons will be investigated in three years. The study started in Malmö in March this year and will also be performed at university hospitals in Stockholm, Uppsala, Linköping and Umeå.

- It's fantastic that the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation now supports SCAPIS. Their thorough evaluation is an important quality label for the SCAPIS project. This support together with valuable grants from the Swedish Research Counsil and VINNOVA, is making it possible for the SCAPIS project to be launched in the whole country, says Göran Bergström, head of the Gothenburg study.

The infrastructure for clinical and experimental research that is now being built up around the 30,000 volunteers who will be recruited will be unique and will put Sweden on the world in clinical research.
